Goethe International Science Diplomacy Award: Internationale Forschungskooperation sichtbar machen
Unter dem Motto „Forschung verbindet über Grenzen“ vergibt die Stiftung zur Förderung der internationalen wissenschaftlichen Beziehungen der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt dieses Jahr erstmals den Goethe International Science Diplomacy Award.
Der Preis zeichnet herausragende wissenschaftliche Leistungen aus, die internationalen Austausch fördern, Wissenschaftsfreiheit stärken und globale Verständigung ermöglichen. Wissenschaft ist von Natur aus international – sie lebt vom offenen Dialog, von persönlicher Begegnung und von Kooperationen über politische, kulturelle und geografische Grenzen hinweg. Der Preis fördert diese Verbindungen, deren Bedeutung angesichts weltweiter Desinformation und eingeschränkter Meinungsfreiheit zunimmt.
Was wird ausgezeichnet?
Der Preis würdigt beispielhafte Initiativen und Projekte, etwa:
- internationale Forschungskooperationen der Goethe-Universität mit Partnerinstitutionen in herausfordernden oder von Krisen betroffenen Regionen
- Engagement für den Schutz der Freiheit von Wissenschaft und gefährdeter Forschender
- interkulturellen Austausch und gesellschaftlichen Dialog mit internationalen Wissenschaftsgästen
- innovative Formen internationaler Zusammenarbeit in Forschung, Lehre und Publikation – auch virtuell
- außergewöhnliche internationale wissenschaftliche Konferenzen und Workshops in Frankfurt
Wie läuft das Auswahlverfahren ab?
Vorgeschlagen werden können Wissenschaftler*innen der Goethe-Universität. Vorschlagsberechtigt sind alle Universitätsangehörigen sowie – im Rahmen größerer Forschungsverbünde – auch beteiligte Partnerinstitutionen. Selbstbewerbungen sind ausgeschlossen.
Eine unabhängige Jury aus Mitgliedern des Stiftungsrates, des Präsidiums und des Global Office entscheidet über die Vergabe.
Preisverleihung
Der Goethe International Science Diplomacy Award wird einmal jährlich im Rahmen des Sommerfestes für internationale Gäste der Goethe-Universität verliehen.
Das Preisgeld beträgt aktuell 2.000 Euro.

Connecting Research Across Borders: The Goethe International Science Diplomacy Award
Under the motto “Research Connects Across Borders,” the Foundation for the Promotion of International Scientific Relations at Goethe University is awarding the Goethe International Science Diplomacy Award for the first time this year.
The award recognizes outstanding academic achievements that foster international exchange, strengthen academic freedom, and advance global understanding. Science is inherently international: it thrives on open dialogue, personal encounters, and collaboration across political, cultural, and geographical boundaries. At a time when misinformation is widespread and freedom of expression increasingly restricted, these connections are more vital than ever. The Goethe International Science Diplomacy Award highlights and supports precisely this form of internationally engaged scholarship.
What does the award recognize?
The award honors exemplary initiatives and projects, including:
- International research cooperations between Goethe University and partner institutions in challenging or crisis-affected regions
- Commitment to protecting the freedom of research and supporting researchers at risk
- Intercultural exchange and societal dialogue with international academic guests
- Innovative forms of international collaboration in research, teaching, and publishing –including virtual formats
- Exceptional international academic conferences and workshops held in Frankfurt
How does the selection process work?
All researchers working at Goethe University are eligible for nomination. Nominations may be submitted by all members of the university, as well as by partner institutions involved in larger research collaborations. Self-nominations are not permitted.
An independent jury, composed of members of the foundation’s board, the university’s executive board, and the Global Office, will select the award recipient.
Award ceremony
The Goethe International Science Diplomacy Award is presented annually during Goethe University’s summer festival for international researchers. The current prize money is €2,000.
